Sketches, lithographs, paintings
Don always carried a sketchbook. From the time he arrived in New York in 1928 he sketched everywhere he went. These images capture the vibrancy and humanity of New York City in the faces of the people he observed on the streets, in the theaters, and in the subways. He called these “My City Tis of These,” “Backstage Manhattan,” and “One Man’s View of Manhattan.” Here is a small sampling of hundreds of impressions contained in over 40 sketchbooks that Don has left us. Click on the category on the right to browse through these gems. Most of them have never been shown publicly and I offer here a selection of pages from these sketchbooks for all lovers of, and livers in, New York. In making these public on the Internet, my point is to share my father’s love of New York with all those interested. I hope you enjoy looking around!
